4A Games is the studio behind the Metro series. Founded in Kyiv in 2005, the company is now headquartered in Sliema, Malta, and still runs an office in the Ukrainian capital. Using its in-house 4A Engine, it makes atmospheric first-person shooters that blend survival, horror and a dense story. Its latest project is METRO 2039.

The 4A Games Studio
According to the studio, more than 200 designers, programmers, artists, VFX specialists and writers from around the world now work at 4A Games. The team stresses that it makes its games with a “Ukrainian spirit” and never forgets that the studio was founded in Ukraine. Design, gameplay, atmosphere and the player experience are at the heart of every project, the studio says.
Collaboration across departments matters a lot to the team: anyone can contribute ideas and feedback, no matter what area they work in. The developers play their own games, discuss them and solve problems together.
Offices in Malta and Ukraine
4A Games is headquartered in Sliema, Malta, less than 200 meters from the sea, according to the studio. It describes the office atmosphere as international, since colleagues come from many different countries. And because English is one of Malta's official languages, the studio says new hires find it easier to settle in.
4A Games also runs a freshly renovated office in Kyiv. That's where the studio's story began, and the office remains an important part of the team.
The Metro Series
4A Games made its name with the Metro series, in which characters fight their way through the tunnels and ruins of a post-apocalyptic Moscow. Metro Exodus left the cramped tunnels behind and sent players on a journey across Russia. The series is published by Deep Silver.
4A Games' titles are known for claustrophobic first-person shooting, scarce resources, gas masks and mutants, plus a story that leans heavily on atmosphere.
Current Project: METRO 2039
