Cygnus Cross is an independent studio that’s just taken its first big project, Emberville, into Early Access. Its website describes it as an indie studio with roots in Colombia, while press releases now go out under Cygnus Cross International Ltd., based in Cork, Ireland. What makes the story so interesting is the combo: a small, globally distributed team teaming up with one of the best-known streamers out there.

The history of Cygnus Cross

The studio takes its name from the Cygnus (swan) constellation, a nod to journeys into the unknown. On its official site, CygnusCross calls itself an independent Colombian studio building story-rich, systems-driven worlds, both games and apps, with Brynjar Gigja listed as studio director. According to LinkedIn and Gematsu, Cygnus Cross International is headquartered in Cork, while the team itself works remotely across several countries, including the US, Colombia, Argentina, Brazil and France.

Sources differ on when the studio was founded: the Colombian entity CYGNUSCROSS S.A.S. has been registered since June 2021, but older studio materials say 2017. We’re leaving the founding year blank until the studio confirms it.

CohhCarnage: co-founder and executive producer

Cygnus Cross is best known for its partnership with streamer Ben "CohhCarnage" Cassel. Official Steam announcements credit him as executive producer, and at events like GCX 2026 he took the stage as co-founder and co-game director alongside lead game director Brynjar Gigja. Cohh also voices several characters in the game and has kept his community closely involved in development from day one, with "State of the Game" presentations and Q&As on his channel.

The breakthrough: Emberville

The studio’s debut is Emberville, a pixel-art action RPG that blends Diablo-style combat with Stardew Valley-style town rebuilding. You wake up with no memories inside the Vitromotus, a massive magical prison, rescue survivors and rebuild the town of Emberville together. In development since 2023, the game blew past 280,000 Steam wishlists after its IGN trailer in January 2026, according to the studio.

Emberville enters Early Access on Steam on October 27, 2026. At launch, you get the first of nine planned biomes, the combat and class systems, crafting and town rebuilding. Co-op, mod support and console versions aren’t planned until 1.0.

Emberville combines action RPG and town building.

Gameplay-wise, it’s a mix you don’t see often: by day, you hack, cast and shoot your way through monster-infested zones with sword, magic and bow. Then you head back to town to build houses, farm and craft gear. Every survivor you rescue unlocks new quests, vendors or skills. On top of that, the detailed pixel art and moody lighting deliver tons of atmosphere.

The studio is also refreshingly open with its community. There was a free Steam demo whose progress carries over into Early Access, plus regular dev updates and live Q&As. According to the studio, demo feedback went straight into balancing, controls and quality-of-life features. Regular patches and new biomes are planned post-launch.

An AAA-worthy voice cast

For an indie debut, the voice cast is seriously stacked: Doug Cockle (Geralt in The Witcher), Amelia Tyler, Alex Jordan, Abubakar Salim, Matthew Mercer, Jennifer English, Ben Starr, Jane Perry and many more. The studio says the Early Access build includes around 180 minutes of voiced scenes. The soundtrack comes from Greg Dombrowski of Secession Studios.

Philosophy: no microtransactions

On its Steam page, Cygnus Cross makes it clear: no microtransactions, battle passes, subscriptions or paid DLC. You buy it once, and the studio says the price won’t go up after Early Access. Post-1.0 content will arrive as free updates.

Our assessment

For us, Cygnus Cross is one of the most intriguing indie studios of the year. A small team with a huge community and a big-name cast is a rare combo. We’ll find out whether it lives up to the hype when Early Access kicks off on October 27.
