2001 gegründetes britisches Indie-Studio aus Walton-on-Thames. Bekannt für Uplink, DEFCON, Darwinia und Prison Architect, das 2019 an Paradox verkauft wurde.

Introversion Software is a studio (Indie, Publisher, Indie) based in Walton-on-Thames, England. PlayInsider covers 1 game by Introversion Software: Prison Architect (85).

Introversion Software is one of the best known independent gaming studios from the UK. The small team from Walton-on-Thames is behind cult games like Uplink, DEFCON and above all Prison Architect. I like introversion because the studio has been implementing idiosyncratic ideas for over 20 years instead of following trends.

The story of Introversion Software

It was founded in 2001 by ZQX2, ZQX3 and ZQX4, who had met at ZQX5. Initially, the trio described themselves as “the last Bedroom programmers” because everyone worked from home. The first copies of their debut were still on CD. Chris Delay is still the creative head and Lead Designer of all games, later John Knottenbelt joined as chief of technology.

Uplink, Darwinia and DEFCON

The first Spiel Uplink was a hacker-thriller that quickly found a loyal community. Darwinia followed with its unique retro look, the Atomkriegs-Strategie DEFCON and the Mehrspieler-Ableger Multiwinia. Later, the Erkundungsspiel Scanner Sombre appeared. All titles are united by an unusual style and a clear focus on game ideas instead of bombast graphics.

The breakthrough with Prison Architect

The greatest success is Prison Architect. The Pupils started in 2012 as an envoy October 2015 in version 1.0. According to Introversion, the game has sold on the PC alone over two Millionen Mal and in 2016 won a BAFTA as best "Persistent Game". In 2019, then Paradox Interactive adopted the brand. Since then, Paradox takes care of the game and the successor Prison Architect 2Introversion itself is no longer involved.

Introversion today

By selling Prison Architect, the team was able to dedicate themselves to new projects. Currently, Introversion is working on The Last Starship, a space-building game in which you construct your own spaceships and steer them through the galaxy. The studio remains small and independent and continues to publish its games itself.

Our assessment

Introversion Software shows me how much a small indie team can achieve. With Prison Architect, the studio has shaped an entire genre, and even the older titles have cult status today. More studios can be found in our Developer review. More information is available on the Official website of Introversion Software.
