The Zone is getting bigger, at least it feels that way: with Stalker 2 Update 2.1 „The Zone Lookout“, you can finally decide for yourself how far away you see other stalkers and mutants. On top of that, there’s a new fast travel option via squad leaders. I took a look at the official patch notes.

Stalker 2 Update 2.1: What’s inside
GSC Game World released the update on October 26, 2026 for PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, free for all owners of S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl. The studio calls it the first major update after the huge Patch 2.0 from August, which arrived together with the Cost of Hope expansion. According to GSC, 2.1 was built almost entirely from community feedback.
The four highlights according to the official patch notes:
- New option for a greater view distance for A-Life NPCs
- Binoculars support the new view distances and detect targets farther away
- Fast travel with squad leaders
- Reworked anomalies, including visual improvements to the Arch anomaly in the power plant

New view distance for A-Life NPCs
The biggest feature: under Settings – Game – Visualization you can now choose a preset for how far away A-Life NPCs appear in the Zone. This works not only on PC but on consoles too. The „Dynamic“ preset automatically adjusts the range to your hardware. GSC still recommends the default setting, because higher values can cost performance and stability.
Other systems are tied to the view distance: depending on the preset, you hear gunfights from much farther away, long-range ballistics have been adjusted, anomalies are rendered at a greater distance and the binoculars detect targets farther out. Important: the greater range mainly applies to A-Life NPCs, not quest characters.

Fast travel with squad leaders
Also new is a second type of fast travel. Friendly or neutral squad leaders are now marked on your compass. Talk to them and they’ll take you to nearby destinations along their route. It isn’t cheap, though, and you can’t be overloaded either. On top of that, only nearby locations you’ve already explored are available. So you can’t go straight from Zalissya to Pripyat.
I really like the idea because it fits the feel of the Zone: instead of teleporting via a menu, you travel with real stalkers who happen to be on the move.

AI, anomalies and bug fixes
There’s also a long list of fixes. The most important points at a glance:
- AI: Armed NPCs no longer aim in the wrong direction and will attack you even if you’re not looking directly at them. Mass spawns in Rostok and too many mercenaries at the Duga have been fixed.
- NPCs no longer get stuck at campfires, while looting or in mid-air, and they stand still during dialogue.
- PS5: Many quest characters missing since Patch 2.0 are back, such as Varan, Squint, Scar and Sava.
- Cost of Hope: The expansion’s starting missions can be started again.
- Tech: Performance drops at the Perimeter Dam fixed, scopes with FSR Frame Generation repaired, gamepad on handhelds and Steam Machine fixed.
You can find the full list in GSC’s official patch notes . If you use mods and run into problems after the update, you should disable them first.
The official trailer for Update 2.1
GSC shows off the new features in a short overview trailer.
For me, 2.1 is exactly the kind of update Stalker 2 needed: the Zone finally feels more alive at a distance. You can read our full review of the game here, and you’ll find more news on the homepage.
