With Fable, Playground Games is bringing back one of Xbox's most beloved RPG series. The reboot launches on February 23, 2027 for PC, Xbox Series X|S and, for the first time, PlayStation 5. I've rounded up everything known so far about release, gameplay, platforms and system requirements for you.

What is Fable?

Fable is a reboot of the classic series originally created by Lionhead Studios. The new adventure is being developed by Playground Games, best known so far for the Forza Horizon racing series, and published by Xbox Game Studios. You set out as a new hero through the fantasy kingdom of Albion, which, just like before, is defined by British humor, quirky characters and fairy-tale charm.

The cast includes well-known actors, among them Hayley Atwell, who according to Xbox plays the antagonist. So far, the developers have only revealed more about the story in trailers, so there'll be plenty of guessing about the plot until release.

Dark moments are part of the new Fable as well.

Gameplay: Combat, magic and choices

Fable is a third-person action RPG. In combat, you combine melee with swords and hammers, ranged attacks and magic, as the scenes shown so far demonstrate. As is typical for the series, your choices play a big role: how you treat the residents shapes your reputation and, with it, how Albion reacts to you.

Combat blends melee, ranged attacks and magic.

Beyond combat, you explore towns and villages, talk to residents and also travel the world on horseback. The game is a purely single-player experience, and Steam also lists full controller support.

Albion as an open world

Albion is designed as a large open world. The screenshots show sunny meadows, dense forests, winding towns with market squares and dark night scenes with werewolves and other creatures. That mix of idyll and danger has always defined the series, and for me, the reboot captures exactly that vibe really well so far.

Tech and platforms

Visually, Playground Games is going for realistic, highly detailed graphics with atmospheric lighting. On PC, you'll need decent hardware for that: even for the minimum requirements, Steam lists 12 GB of RAM, a Radeon RX 6600 or GeForce RTX 2060 and 135 GB of SSD storage. You'll find all the details in the table below this article.

Fable is well covered on the language front: according to Steam, German voice acting is included as well as German text. Fable launches on PC via Steam and the Microsoft Store, on Xbox Series X|S and on PlayStation 5.

Release, price and Game Pass

Fable launches on February 23, 2027. On Steam, the Standard Edition costs €69.99. According to Xbox, the Premium Edition lets you start playing five days early. Fable is also included in Game Pass from day one. PEGI has rated the game 18, and there's no USK rating for Germany yet.

Verdict and outlook

For me, Fable is one of the most exciting RPGs of 2027. With Forza Horizon, Playground Games has proven that the studio knows how to do open worlds, and Albion's fairy-tale look looks fantastic so far. What's still open is how deep the RPG systems will go and whether the story can keep up with the classics. We'll keep you posted here.
