Mycopunk is a colorful co-op shooter in which you, as a team of discarded robots, free a planet from a fungal plague. It was developed by the young studio Pigeons at Play and is published by Devolver Digital. After its Early Access launch on July 10, 2025, version 1.0 came out on October 20, 2026 for PC and PlayStation 5.
I took a look at how the full version plays, where it shines and where it falters. On Steam, around 88 percent of reviews are currently positive.

Rating and verdict
Mycopunk has strong ideas, especially the upgrade grid and the dismemberable enemies. The shooter is a lot of fun with friends.
Alone, though, the appeal is missing, the missions repeat and the effects are often too much. For me, it’s therefore a decent but not outstanding co-op shooter.

✅ Dismemberable fungal enemies
✅ Lots of fun in four-player co-op
What bothered us
❌ Much weaker alone

Mycopunk: How a mission plays out
You’re part of New Atlas’s hazard response team, a kind of pest control on behalf of the SAXON corporation. From an orbital ship, you choose missions on the planet and fight your way through hordes of fungal enemies. The enemies use the planet’s technology against you and can be taken apart piece by piece.

The first few hours still feel fairly ordinary. Several Steam players write that the game really ignites after two to three hours, when battles get more chaotic and enemies get bigger. Others criticize that the missions become repetitive over time and the enemy waves sometimes feel unfair.
Weapons, upgrades and co-op
The highlight is the grid-based upgrade system. With every mission, you get mods that you place and combine in a grid. Bit by bit, a rusty weapon turns into a completely crazy sci-fi weapon. You can also specialize in healing and support.

Mycopunk is clearly built for co-op with up to four players. The game is playable alone but much less fun, which Steam reviews also confirm. Many compare it to Deep Rock Galactic and Risk of Rain 2. You can read more about the studio on our page about Pigeons at Play.

Graphics, sound and tech
The graphics are vividly colorful and comic-like, which suits the fungal world well. At times, though, the effects are so strong that players wish for options against screen shake and distortion. The soundtrack is often praised. Technically, you need an RTX 2080 for high details; a GTX 960 is enough for low.
