Tropico 7 is here, or almost: on January 28, 2027, we slip back into El Presidente’s parade uniform and rule a Caribbean island nation with an iron fist, charm and a well-stocked Swiss bank account. The seventh entry in the cult series is being developed by Gaming Minds Studios from Gütersloh, with Kalypso Media on board as publisher as usual. What’s in it, what’s new and what does your PC need? We’ve gathered all the official info on Tropico 7 for you.

What is Tropico 7?

Tropico 7 is a city-building and political simulation with a healthy dose of satire. You develop an island from scratch into a thriving nation, take care of the economy, housing, jobs, leisure and security, and on the side keep factions, rebels and foreign powers happy, or keep them down. Fans have known the principle for over 20 years: you’re not a faceless mayor but a vain dictator leading your people through the decades. The game’s motto applies: control isn’t tyranny, it ensures efficiency.

The series has always thrived on humor. Tropico 7 also wonderfully pokes fun at posturing, propaganda and bureaucracy. If you like city building but have no desire for dry spreadsheets, you’re in exactly the right place.

Setting and story

El Presidente vs. Victoria Guerra

For the first time, the campaign tells El Presidente’s success story continuously across five campaign maps. Of course, Penultimo is back too, the president’s loyal (and occasionally overwhelmed) right hand. New to the ensemble is an antagonist: Victoria Guerra. According to Kalypso, she grows straight out of Tropico’s fertile soil and becomes a serious threat to your rule. The campaign motto sums it up: „¡Victoria no es la revolución!“

From decade to decade

As in its predecessors, you lead your island through several eras. Buildings, technologies and political options change along the way, and your citizens‘ needs grow over time too. Kalypso hasn’t yet revealed in detail exactly how the eras in Tropico 7 are divided.

Gameplay features of Tropico 7

Terraforming: Moving mountains, literally

The biggest new feature is terraforming. You can raise mountains or make them disappear, shape beaches and even create entire new islands. That means you no longer just plan your cities around the landscape but adapt the landscape to your plans. For fans of big building projects, that’s a real game changer.

The new council in the palace

Domestic politics gets more personal. In the new council, you summon the factions to your palace and sit directly across from their representatives. There, you negotiate, make concessions or talk them into a „Big Deal“ in your favor. On top of that come election rigging, campaign speeches and a wide range of edicts that depend on your political orientation.

Building boom with synergies

Buildings benefit from synergy effects if you place them cleverly. That increases citizen satisfaction and the efficiency of your businesses. You fill open spaces with parks of freely customizable size and shape. That sounds like more creative freedom than ever before in the series.

Military, foreign policy and world wonders

The revised military system gives you more direct control over your units, whether rebels or invaders come knocking. In foreign policy, you juggle the great powers and occasionally „steal“ a world wonder, pardon, relocate it. You can also customize the look of your palace and El Presidente.

What’s new compared to Tropico 6?

In 2019, Tropico 6 introduced archipelagos and raids. Tropico 7 builds on that and adds a lot more in terms of size: according to the developer, the islands are the biggest the series has ever seen. Besides the campaign, there are ten additional scenarios, more than 20 sandbox maps and infinitely many randomly generated maps. The real innovations, though, are terraforming, the council as a direct negotiation stage, the connected story campaign with Victoria Guerra, freely shapeable parks and the revised military. And with Gaming Minds Studios, a new team takes over the series after Limbic Entertainment developed Tropico 6.

Tech and system requirements

Tropico 7 relies on Windows 11 and DirectX 12. For the minimum requirements, you need an Intel Core i5-10400F or AMD Ryzen 5 2600X, 16 GB RAM and a graphics card with 6 GB VRAM such as the GeForce RTX 2060 or Radeon RX 5600 XT. Recommended are a Core i5-14600K or Ryzen 5 7600X, also 16 GB RAM, and a GeForce RTX 4060 or Radeon RX 7600 XT. According to Steam, both refer to normal settings in Full HD. You should keep 40 GB free on your drive.

Tropico 7 is broadly covered language-wise: text is available in twelve languages including German. You get full voice-over in German, English, Spanish and Chinese (Simplified). So El Presidente gets to ramble on in German again. Full controller support is included on PC as well.

Release and platforms

Tropico 7 comes out on January 28, 2027. The release was originally announced for 2026, but Kalypso then took a little more time. At launch, the game will be available for PC (Steam, Epic Games Store and Xbox on PC), Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch 2. Tropico 7 is also included in Xbox Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass from day one. The USK rating is still pending; internationally, the game is rated PEGI 12.

Verdict and outlook

On paper, Tropico 7 does exactly what fans want: more space, more creative freedom and a campaign with a real story instead of loosely connected missions. Terraforming and the new council could noticeably refresh the proven dictator gameplay without losing the series‘ typical humor. Whether Gaming Minds manages the balancing act between depth and accessibility will only become clear after release. Until then: wishlist it, put on your sunglasses and start practicing your campaign speeches. We’ll keep you posted on Tropico 7.
